Season 2 – Episode 7 & 8 – Dead Man Walking & A Day in the Death

Well hello there everyone, I have been quiet the last few issues, so I do apologise for my absence.  I have had to save the universe a couple of times with my trusty companion in the TARDIS and also leave Jack hanging around like a lost puppy (in my not so fantasy world…work duties called).  So I do have a few issues to catch up on with my locations guide.  Well this issue is going to look at the locations for 2 episodes as in my eyes these are a 2 parter.  Enough of me rabbiting on, let’s get on with the locations. 

St Matthew’s Church, Dorothy Street, Trallwyn, Pontypridd

This location is used for the scene where Jack wanders into a church full of Sleeping Weevils.  In this episode the church is called St. Mary’s, but the actual church is St. Matthew’s which is in Pontypridd.  The location is disused but the rumours are that back in 2007, there was planning permission for it to be turned into flats.

How to get there: (By Car)

Road: A470 – Exit the A470 at Pontypridd (A4223), and then head off the roundabout on Bridge Street/West Street.  This bears right into South Street and then left onto Middle Street.  Continue along this one way street until you reach Ralph Street; turning right, follow it up to the church.

The Friary, Cardiff, CF10 3FA

This location is for when Owen is wandering around aimlessly.  This is not far from the Location used in Day 1.  It’s about a 5 – 10 minute walk from Cardiff Central Bus Station.  Go back to the Day 1 guide for the directions.

Oceana, Greyfriars Road, Cardiff, CF10 3DP (Now known as PRYZM)

This night club was used for a location when Jack confronts Owen in a bar.  The club back then was known as Oceana but has been rebranded as PRYZM.  Also around the back of the club is Crockherbtown Lane which is a location used for a scene when Jack and Owen get arrested by the police.

How to get there:

From Cardiff Bus Station, head out along Wood Street and walk towards St. Mary’s Street.  Walk up St. Mary’s Street until you hit Wharton Street.  Turn Right here and walk along Wharton Street.  Turn left on Working Street walk up until you get to the Abbey National Bank.  Turn Right and walk along Queen Street until you have Queen Arcade on your Right.  Turn Left and walk up the Friary until you come to the Hilton Hotel on your Left.  Turn Right and walk along Greyfriars Road.  Oceana is on your Right opposite the New Theatre. 

Turn Right and you will see the entrance to the venue.  If you walk past the venue a few metres you will also come to Crockherbtown Lane.

NCP Car Park, Wood Street, Great Western Lane, Cardiff, CF10 1EN

This location is used for when Jack and Owen are chased by Weevils.

How to get there:

From Cardiff Central Station (Train) head towards Burger King.  You will then see some public toilets in a cabin.  Walk towards these and you will see a lane.  Walk up this lane and you are walking alongside the Car Park on your Right.  Follow the Car Park around and you will come to its entrance.

Optometry and Visual Sciences, Cardiff University, Maindy Road, Cathays, Cardiff, CF24 4LU

This location is used for when Owen sees Death walking down the stairs.

How to get there:

From the Bus Station turn right onto Wood Street and walk to the junction at Westgate Street.  Walk along Westgate Street until you get to the top by the Castle on your Right.  Turn Left onto Castle Street and come across the road.  Walk into the Castle Grounds also known as Bute Park. 

Walk along the path until you come to the junction with 3 ways to go and take the right hand one.  Follow this path and then take the Left turn.  Follow that path until you see a bridge on your Right.  Turn Right and cross the bridge onto North Road.  You will go past the Welsh College of Music and Drama on your left. 

Cross the road and turn Right onto Corbett Road.  Follow Corbett Road and continue across to Cathay’s Terrace.  Turn Right onto Maindy Road.  Walk past Lidl’s on your Left and your location is a bit further along on your Left. 

Royal Glamorgan Hospital, Ynysmaerdy, Llantrisant, CF72 8XR

This location is used for the hospital scene.

How to get there: (By Bus)

Catch the Stagecoach Service 122 to Tonypandy from Cardiff, Greyfriars Road 1 bus stop.  (15 mins past the hour, 35 mins past the hour and 55 mins past the hour).

Get off at the hospital.

Wharton Street, Cardiff

This location is used for when Owen is reflecting on his death as people are hurrying on around him living their lives.

How to get there:

From Cardiff Bus Station, head out along Wood Street and walk towards St. Mary’s Street.  Walk up St. Mary’s Street until you hit Wharton Street.

Bute Park, Cardiff.

This location is used for when Owen is running through a park.  We are unsure of the exact location in the park this was filmed.

How to get there:

From the Bus Station, turn Right onto Wood Street and walk to the junction of Westgate Street.  Walk along Westgate Street until you get to the top by the Castle on your Right.  Turn Left onto Castle Street and cross the road.  Walk into the Castle Grounds also known as Bute Park.

Mermaid Quayside, Cardiff Bay (The Pier)

This location is used for when Owen runs off the pier and jumps into the sea.

How to get there:

From the Torchwood Tour (with you looking at the Millennium Centre), turn Right and walk straight down under the bridge.  When you see the piers, turn Left and walk to the one furthest away from you.  That is the pier used and also where Owen pulls himself back out of the water.

Tower Building, Park Place, Cardiff

This location is used when Owen meets Maggie who is contemplating committing suicide.  This location is Cardiff University’s building, so you will not be able to gain access to the roof where the scene was filmed.

How to get there: 

Walk from the Bus Station, turn Right onto Wood Street and walk to the junction of Westgate Street.  Walk along Westgate Street until you get to the top by the Castle on your right. 

Turn Left onto Castle Street and cross the road.  Walk into the Castle Grounds also known as Bute Park.  Walk along the path until you come to a junction with 3 ways to go and take the Right hand one.  Follow this path and take the Left turn. 

Follow that path until you can see a bridge on your Right.  Turn Right and cross the bridge onto North Road.  You will go past the Welsh College of Music and Drama on your Left. 

Cross the road and turn Right onto Corbett Road.  Follow Corbett Road and turn Right onto Park Place.  Walk down and you will come to the Tower Building on your Right hand side. 

Imperial Park Bypass, nr Coedkernew, Newport, NP10

This location is used for when Maggie loses her new husband.  This location is a disused bypass road. 

How to get there: (By Car)

Road: M4 – Exit the M4 at Junction 28, then follow the A48 westwards towards Castleton. At the third roundabout (Coedkernew) turn Left and the bypass runs from the next junction.

Parking Details:

It is possible to park alongside the bypass on the side of the roundabout.

Where to walk.

At the roundabout, walk through the gateway onto the closed dual carriageway.

Glamorgan Building, Cardiff University, King Edward VII Avenue, Cathays Park, Cardiff, CF10 3WT

This location is used for the scene depicting the Parker’s residence.  We are unsure where in the building this place is and we are unsure if you can gain access unless you’re a student of the University. 

How to get there:

From the Bus Station turn Right onto Wood Street and walk to the junction of Westgate Street.  Walk along Westgate Street until you get to the top by the Castle on your Right.  Turn Left onto Castle Street and cross the road.  Walk into the Castle Grounds also known as Bute Park.  Walk along the path until you come to a junction with 3 ways to go and take the Right hand one.  Follow this path and then take the Left turn. 

Follow that path until you can see a bridge on your right.  Turn Right and cross the bridge onto North Road.  You will go past the Welsh College of Music and Drama on your Left.

When you come to the A470 (North Road), cross the road and head back down towards the Castle until you meet College Road on your Left.

Walk along College Road and your location is halfway on the Left hand side.
