I thought
it would be easy to explain Game of Thrones in a sentence, but after asking a
few people who had read the novels and watched the first three seasons; this
seems to be an impossible task. So I
watched a few episodes of the first season and to those who have never seen the
series before...and believe me, there are a few people who haven't, there are several
noble houses that are waging war against each other for the Iron Throne which I
believe is that really uncomfortable looking chair of swords, of the Seven
Kingdoms. In Season 1 it appears that in
order to strengthen the bond between two of the major families, the House Stark
and the House Lannister that they must join forces, and merge. And by merging it means that the eldest
daughter in the Stark family must marry the Lannisters boy, Joffrey (a future
king who you want to hit in the face with a chair) – he’s a nasty piece of
work, but then he’s the product of a brother and sister relationship.
Across
the water the Targaryens are also merging with the Dothraki. The Targaryen’s have some connection with
dragons. There's warring factions that
surround these families, and while they are all fighting to gain control of the
throne, having illegal sex, lopping heads off horses, heads off each other,
arguing, talking, plotting, and more talking, and more needless sex, a darker threat
is travelling towards them. Winter is
coming which is a term used for the White Walkers, which look like zombie ring
wraiths without clothes or crowns.
The
Series was created by D.B. Weiss and David Benioff, and is based on George R.R.
Martin’s, ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’. It
was filmed in Northern Island, Malta, Scotland, Croatia, Iceland, United States
of America, Spain and Morocco. The
episodes last between 50 – 65 minutes.
It’s a medieval fantasy series on HBO channel which viewers can watch
over on Sky, unless you have the odd box set!
I had
read that this was very much like Lord of the Rings; but I'm thinking that this
description is very wrong, or it’s only like LOTR as it also stars Sean
Bean. To me there's too much of
everything and it’s so bloody depressing I just can’t feel a shred of
enthusiasm to watch further, but then I’ve been told that I have to get past
the first 5 episodes before it starts getting exciting, and you can’t skip the
first 5 episodes either, as these are crucial for the entire series, about the
characters, who they are, what they do, where they fit into the rest of the
story and so on.
It’s a
star studded cast with quite a few actors and writers and stunt coordinators
etc from the world of Who and Torchwood, which will have you exclaiming and
pointing at the screen, if you’re an annoying geek like I am. The writer George R.R. Martin certainly has
an imagination that exceeds any others I have read or heard about, who can
think up the lives of all of the characters, and still have so many yet to come
into the story from the books to the television series. It has grabbed the audience by storm, and in
a way I wish I had the patience to follow it.
It’s
interesting to see just how many of the cast of Who and Torchwood appear in this
show, not just one or two, but loads. It
used to be the case that everyone wanted to be in Doctor Who, now it seems,
everyone wants to be in Game of Thrones.
As the
series is still ongoing, there may be more surprises coming from new characters
as of yet to appear that IMDB haven’t listed.

Stark. She's very tomboyish and can handle herself quite well in a fight, and
to keep her alive after the death of Joffrey and the warring between the
Lannisters and Starks, kept her hair short and lived as a boy until she was
later found out.
Arya is
also a skinchanger - someone capable of possessing her direwolf Nymeria in
dreams and able to physically bond with a street cat in Braavos.
